About Us

Welcome to the Northeastern Research Station, a field unit of the United States Forest Service. Our mission is characterized by the slogan, Improving Lives and Protecting Our Earth Through Research. The Northeastern Research Station, serving the people and lands of the 13 northeastern states, strives to provide discovery, technology development, and science-based technology transfer within a balanced science portfolio that includes forest management, protection, and use.

Our goal with this web site is to help you quickly get the information you need about forest research to help solve natural resources management problems.

Over 80 years ago, the Northeastern Research Station was created. Our original mission was to study tree species and explore replanting methods to help manage the National Forests. Through the years, our scope and purpose has changed and expanded dramatically. We are now a global leader in forest research, conservation and sustainability. We help public land managers and private landowners improve the health and use of their natural resources. Of course, we still help make our National Forests productive, healthy and sustainable for use.

The Northeastern Research Station has over 400 world-class scientists and support staff located throughout the 13-state region. Partnering with federal, state and local governments, universities, public schools, and private industry, we are committed to the conservation of our natural resources while striving to balance the wide range of forest stewardship issues and concerns in the northeast.

We have so much more to do. Many do not realize the benefits of our research and the leading edge technology we develop to improve people's lives. The new century presents many challenges - from global climate change, to urban sprawl, to improved environmental literacy through education. With you, we are ready to meet these challenges and others yet uncovered. We hope this web site serves you well and allows all who use it to achieve and sustain a commitment to conservation. Let us know how we can make it better to serve you.

Very respectfully,

Michael T. Rains
